Visakhapatnam: Kazakhstan is a popular destination for Indian medical students. G. Bhavani, a resident of Maddilapalem, was happy that finally she got an admission into a medical college abroad.

On March 11, 2024, she landed in Almaty city of the Central Asian country with hopes of becoming a medical doctor in a few years. Her happiness was short-lived as she started facing problems within a few days after she got admission into the Caspian University. .

Bhavani was given an accommodation in the boy’s hostel. But, she was not ready to live in the mixed-gender accommodation. The university officials started harassing her for not accepting the assigned accommodation.

The Indian girl student was threatened with dire consequences when she resisted the university administration’s order to shift to her accommodation within the boy’s hostel. When she refused to take the accommodation, the administration said she can get back her passport only after paying the full course fee.

Distressed and feeling threatened, Bhavani sent a video message to her parents explaining about her unsafe living conditions on the campus. She told her parents that she cannot live among boys who smoke, make obscene gestures and harass other girls in the university.

Anxious parents soon approached the Gajuwaka police and filed a complaint saying their daughter got admission in a Kazakhstan university through the GVK Consultancy in Visakahapatnam. They informed the police that the representatives of consultancy had told them that there would be separate accommodation for boys and girls.

The parents also reached out to the consultancy and requested them to shift their daughter to a safe accommodation. When the boys got to know of Bhavani’s complaint, they barged into her room and warned her not to complain about the hostel.
