Kadapa Quarry Blast: AP Begins Probe

At least ten labourers were killed and several feared trapped under the debris after a blast at a limestone quarry in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. The incident took place in Mamillapalle village of Kalasapadu block on Saturday.

The incident occured when the labourers were unloading gelatin sticks from a vehicle. The body parts of the deceased were not found and the vehicle was completely burnt.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed deep shock over the death of the workers in the blast. He has ordered a high level inquiry into the matter. 

AP State Minister for Mines and Geology, Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy stated on Sunday that a committee comprising five departments, has been set up to find the exact reason behind the blast. The committee will be headed by Kadapa district joint collector (revenue) and a detailed report would be submitted to the government within five days.

He further added that Rs.10 lakh is being sanctioned as ex gratia to the families of each deceased while Rs. 5 lakh each will be given to those injured.
The Minister said that proper safety precautions might not have been taken while unloading the explosives and strict action would be taken against the mine's leaseholder.
