Andhra Pradesh to Impose Green Tax on Vehicles

Andhra Pradesh: The government of Andhra Pradesh will implement a Green Tax as an environmentally beneficial measure that may impose additional costs on vehicle buyers. All vehicles, save motorcycles and autorickshaws, will be subject to the Green Tax in the near future.

On Wednesday, the State Assembly passed the AP Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Bill 2021, paving the way for the implementation of a green tax.

The amendment is part of the Centre's suggestion of a Green Tax to safeguard the environment from carbon emissions, according to Transport Minister Perni Venkataramaiah, who presented the AP Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Bill 2021.

Tax Slabs

The green tax of Rs 4,000, which is half of the quarterly tax per annum, will be levied on transport vehicles that are 7 to 10 years old at the time of registration, and similarly, Rs 5,000 per annum will be levied on vehicles that are 10 to 12 years old, and Rs 6,000 per annum will be levied on vehicles that are more than 12 years old.

Tax Hike

Along with the green tax, there will be an increase in the tax on new vehicles, which will be 1% on vehicles under Rs 5 lakh and 3% on vehicles between Rs 10 and Rs 20 lakh, with a total of 18% tax on luxury vehicles costing more than Rs 20 lakh.
