AMARAVATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday rang up Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy in the wake of ‘Lockdown 4.0’ coming to an end on Sunday, 31st May. The two are said to have discussed the issue of lockdown and its extension besides COVID-19 preventive measures. AP CM on this occasion is reported to have briefed the Union home minister on the relentless initiatives being taken up by the state government for curbing the coronavirus pandemic in the state.

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was also believed to have highlighted the state government’s approach in conducting the COVID-19 tests on a massive scale in the state. Amit Shah is said to have elicited the opinion of YS Jagan on the issue of extension of lockdown in view of many other chief ministers favouring the lockdown to be in place for another two weeks. Later in the day, the Union Home Minister also held a crucial meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this very issue and the two are said to have arrived at an in-principle decision on the way forward for tackling the dreaded virus in the country.

The two are said to have taken into consideration the varied opinions expressed by chief ministers of various states.

There is speculation that the Centre may opt for extension of the shutdown in the name of ‘Lockdown 5.0’ for two more weeks while announcing more relaxations to a few other sectors to keep the wheel of economy running.

According to sources, PM Modi is likely to announce Lockdown 5.0 in his Mann Ki Baat radio address on Sunday, the last day of Lockdown 4.0.
