New Delhi: Responding to TIME magazine's cover page calling him 'Divider-In-Chief', Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the magazine is foreign and the writer of the article comes from a Pakistani political family.

"Time magazine is foreign, the writer has also said he comes from a Pakistani political family. That is enough for his credibility," PM Modi said on Friday.

American news magazine Time featured Modi on the cover of its May 20 international edition with a headline in the cover that reads "India's Divider in Chief" and carries a portrait of the Prime Minister. A secondary headline on the cover reads "Modi the Reformer."

Written by Aatish Taseer, the headline read, "Can the World's Largest Democracy Endure Another Five Years of a Modi Government?". Taseer is the son of Indian journalist Tavleen Singh and late Pakistani politician and businessman Salmaan Taseer.

The article criticised the Modi government and referred to mob lynchings, the appointment of Yogi Adityanath as Uttar Pradesh's Chief Minister and the decision to field controversial figure Pragya Singh Thakur, who is a key accused in the 2008 Malegoan blasts case.

The article also wrote about Congress and said that the party had "little to offer than the dynastic principle" and describes Rahul Gandhi as "an unteachable mediocrity".

Opposition parties pounced on the opportunity and launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said that the author is Pakistani and "nothing better can be expected from Pakistan".
