BENGALURU/KERALA: The 21-day lockdown period has led to a serious after-effect on people who are addicted to alcohol. Unable to handle the withdrawal symptoms and frustrated at the non-availability of alcohol, tipplers are attempting suicide at different places in the country.

The past few days have seen tipplers commit suicide in the southern states of Kerala, Karnataka and Telangana as well.

Karnataka

In a Karnataka village, a man identified as Hanumanthappa (48), a resident of Chikkadalavatta village in Madhugiri Tehsil in Tumakuru district, attempted suicide as he was unable to get alcohol for the past four days. He was admitted to a hospital in Bengaluru with grievous neck injuries, police said

In another instance, a man caused a flutter by warning in a video message that he would end his life if he was not provided liquor. The man from Turuvekere in Tumakuru district held the prime minister and the state chief minister for not being able to procure liquor. Coming to know about the video, police rounded him up and when questioned said that some people forced him to issue a video message. "I never intended to commit suicide. I am safe and nothing has happened to me," he said in another video message, apparently shot by a police officer.

Kerala

Frustrated at not being able to get liquor due to the lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus, two men ended their lives in different part of Kerala, police said on Sunday.

Suneesh (32) from Kodungaloor in Thrissur district allegedly committed suicide by drowning a river nearby, police said. "Suneesh was frustrated over the non-availability of liquor and was showing withdrawal symptoms. The complaint says he left home late in the night and jumped into the river. His body was recovered from Irinjalakuda, in Thrissur district itself," investigating officer said.

Meanwhile, Noufal (34), allegedly drank after-shave lotion after he struggled with withdrawal symptoms for last two days, the police added. Noufal was admitted to hospital in Alappuzha district after he felt uneasy.

"As per the statement from the family, he was a regular drinker after he returned from abroad a year ago," Vallikunnam police said.

Earlier, a 38-year-old daily wage labourer Sanoj had on Friday committed suicide, by hanging himself from a tree near his house, after showing withdrawal symptoms, police had said.

The state government had earlier informed that those who have withdrawal symptoms due to non-consumption of alcohol could make use of the de-addiction centres in the districts.

Telangana

In Hyderabad a 50-year-old daily wage worker in the film industry allegedly committed suicide on Saturday, as he was upset at not being able to get liquor after the coronavirus lockdown. After struggling with withdrawal symptoms the person identified as P Madhu jumped off a government residential building on Friday morning, police said.

Recent reports also show that many alcohol addicts are being sent to the mental hospital at Erragadda in the city as they are unable to handle the withdrawal symptons due to non- availability of alcohol. Family members of these patients say that they are behaving odly and in a errant manner. Some were talking to themselves, while some were turning violent and hurting either themselves or their family members.

Doctors are finding it diificult to treat them and are sending them to de-addiction centres for help.
