BIRBHUM: Parents of some girl students in a private school started an agitation against the Birbhum district school authorities for shaming their children over school uniform on Tuesday, November 19 in West Bengal.

Parents alleged that school authorities forced the children to take off their leggings (close-fitting garments worn over the legs), as they were not part of the school’s dress code. Parents said that their children wore these leggings, as the winter had set in and it was cold in the mornings at Bolpur.

Some of the parents had complained that their children were not wearing underwear beneath the leggings and the alleged act by the school management was akin to shaming them and outraging their modesty.

Parents filed a police complaint against the school authorities at Shantiniketan police station. West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Ananya Chakraborty responded over the incident and said that it is completely unacceptable and they will conduct an inquiry over the incident.

The school head mistress, Archana Fernandes said that despite school management warning parents many times over their children wearing dresses that are not approved by the school management; they still sent them in those clothes. The allegation over the school management stripping the students is incorrect, she said and that the school management even apologised parents for this act.

Police officer Abhishek Roy said that they have received a complaint and that started an inquiry into the matter.
