GURUDASPUR (Punjab): The much-awaited Kartarpur Corridor, which is about 4 kms from International Border between India and Pakistan, will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on one saide, and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on the other on Saturday. The Founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev spent almost 18 years at Kartarpur and he also took last breath in this place, which is considered as most auspicious for Sikhs all over the world, particularly in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and other places in the country.

The inauguration is being done just three days before the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and along with Prime Minister Modi, a group of 550 pilgrims including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, actor-politician Sunny Deol, and Union Ministers Hardeep Puri and Harsimrat Kaur Badal will visit the sacred place. Congress MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu was also given political clearance to visit the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib by the foreign ministry on Thursday.

Sikhs from around the world have been arriving in Pakistan ahead of the celebrations for several days already.

PM Modi will inaugurate a passenger terminal building, also known as Integrated Check Post, where pilgrims will get clearance to travel through the newly-built corridor. Before the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister will offer prayers at Ber Sahib Gurudwara at Sultanpur Lodhi, a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office. PM Modi will participate in a public programme at Dera Baba Nanak after the inauguration.

The 4.5 km-long corridor connects Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab's Gurdaspur with Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, a small town about four km from the International Border, located at Narowal district of Pakistan's Punjab province.

Few days ago, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that there will be no fee to visit the shrine on the inaugural day, but it was contradicted by Army and Foreign Office of Pakistan. They announced that the Pak government will be collected $20 Dollars as fee from the pilgrims from Punjab and other parts of India. Finally, the fee was waived by the Pak government in last minute, abiding Imran Khan’s statement. Disagreement over the issue even led to a delay in launching online registration for pilgrims intending to visit the shrine.

Dera Baba Nanak is likely to receive some 30,000 pilgrims daily for four days between Friday and Monday. The pilgrims will be accommodated in 544 European-style tents, 100 Swiss cottages and 20 darbar-style tents on a 30-acre plot.
