New Delhi: For those who grew up listening to the ad tune " Hamara Bajaj" and driving the iconic scooter brand of yesteryear, there is good news from the Bajaj Auto brand. The company on Wednesday announced that the 'Chetak' scooter is making its comeback in an electric avatar, as a premium offering.

E-Chetak Details

Bajaj Auto said it plans to start selling the e-scooter from January onwards first in Pune and then in Bengaluru and based on the response, it will expand operations to other locations.

The price of Chetek e-scooter is said to be not more than Rs 1.5 lakh, but the company is yet to disclose the price.

It has a driving range of 95 kms on eco- mode and 85 km on sports-mode on a single charge of around 5 hours.

The new electric version, will also be exported to various relevant markets in Europe from next year itself.

The Chetak e-scooter would be rolled out from the company's Chakan plant .

It would be retailed from its Pro-Biking dealerships and outlets.

The e-scooter was unveiled by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in presence of Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant and Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj.

Chetak History

Launched in the early 70's, the Chetak scooter had sold over a crore units in its hey days. Its waiting period ran into not just months but years and it became a household name with its popular campaign 'Hamara Bajaj'. However, the sales dwindled after two-wheeler market moved towards motorcycles and the company stopped production of the Chetak in mid-2000s.
