Vinayaka Chaturthi 2019: The most awaited celebration of the year, Ganesh Chaturthi, is just days away and and the festival is celebrated with zest across the nation.

The festival also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi is an 11-day festival that commences on Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of Bhaadrapada month which falls in the months of August or September of the Gregorian calendar. This year it will start from September 2 and the visarjan date is September 12.

To mark the festival, idols of Lord Ganesha is installed in various locations as well as brought to homes and the deity is prayed for prosperity and knowledge. Lord Ganesha is believed to be the god of new beginnings, the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom and intelligence.

Interestingly, the festival was started by freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak in an attempt to bring the people together and instill a sense of unity even as the British wanted to divide the nation.
