Kolkata: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has been slapped with an arrest warrant by a Kolkata Court on Tuesday for his "Hindu-Pakistan" remark which he had made in July 2018 in Thiruvanathapuram.

A Metropolitan Magistrate court of the city was dealing with a case filed by an advocate Sumeet Chowdhary that the Lok Sabha member was hurting religious sentiments and degrading Indian nation.

Tharoor made the comment in a meeting held in his constituency last year where he had said that if BJP were ever to come back to power they would turn India into Hindu version of Islamic Pakistan, stripping religious minorities of any rights. Pakistan came into being on the founding principle that it will remain an Islamic nation as against secular India.

"If they (BJP) win a repeat in the Lok Sabha, our democratic constitution as we understand it will not survive as they will have all the elements they need to tear apart the constitution of India and write a new one," the Congress leader had said.

"..that new one will be the one which will enshrine principles of Hindu Rashtra, that will remove equality for minorities, that will create a Hindu Pakistan and that isn't what Mahatama Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad and great heroes of freedom struggle fought for," he had added.
