Hyderabad: Today marks the 133rd birth anniversary of one of the country's prominent successful woman doctors in the early 20th century and the Tamil Nadu's first woman legislator Muthulakshmi Reddi. The Google Doodle shows Dr. Reddi guiding young girls and women and is created by Bangalore-based guest artist Archana Sreenivasan.

Born on July 30, 1886, in Pudukottai princely state, Dr. Reddi was the first Indian girl student in the Department of Surgery at Madras Medical College. Not just this, she became one of the first women doctors in India in 1912, and the first woman house surgeon in the Government Maternity Hospital, Madras.

Reddi took up various social service activities and became the first woman legislator of Tamil Nadu assembly. As a legislator, she helped raise the minimum age for marriage for girls and pushed the Council to pass the Immoral Traffic Control Act, and the Devadasi system abolishment Bill.

Reddi was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956, and also founded the Adyar Cancer Institute. She passed away in 1968 at the age of 81.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government on Monday announced 'Hospital Day' celebrations to be held every year on July 30, to mark her birth anniversary.
