New Delhi: In the aftermath of protests against Hindi imposition and the subsequent change in the draft National Education policy, singer-composer A R Rahman on Tuesday sent out a cryptic tweet that has become a matter of speculation. Many have interpreted the message and commented in the tweet saying autonomy for Tamil Nadu matters.

By 5 pm on Wednesday, the tweet had over 22,000 likes and over 5,000 retweets. The Oscar-winning composer has always kept his opinions on political matters private.

Last week, protests erupted by the main political parties of Tamil Nadu DMK and AIADMK over the National Draft education policy, in what they termed as Hindi imposition in non-Hindi speaking states.

The draft of the new National Education Policy, proposed by the panel constituted by Javadekar when he was HRD minister in the previous Modi government, had suggested teaching of Hindi in non-Hindi speaking states. The Kasturirangan Committee has recommended teaching of Hindi, English and one regional language in the non-Hindi states; and Hindi, English and one modern Indian language from other parts of the country in Hindi-speaking states.

The furore led a change in the draft and the revised draft deleted the reference to Hindi.

It read, "In keeping with the principle of flexibility, students who wish to change one or more of the three languages they are studying may do so in Grade 6 or Grade 7, so long as they are able to still demonstrate proficiency in three languages..."

Rahman, after the revision, tweeted in Tamil that the draft policy has been corrected and described it as 'beautiful solution'.

"Hindi is not mandatory in Tamil Nadu. Draft policy corrected. Beautiful solution," Rahman tweeted in Tamil.
