Pakistan Suspends Samjhauta Express Indefinitely

Lahore: The Samjhauta Express train services between Pakistan and India has been suspended by the Pakistani government. The biweekly train which runs on Monday and Thursday has temporarily been stopped till further notice in view of the prevailing tensions between Pakistan and India, said a Pakistan's Foreign Office (FO) spokesman on Thursday.

The statement did not give any specific date for resuming the train service and only mentioned that the morning train service scheduled to depart for India at 8.00 am was cancelled.

The Samjhauta Express, which comprises of six sleeper coaches and an AC 3-tier coach, started on July 22, 1976, under the Shimla Agreement that settled the 1971 war between the two nations.

In the wake of the Pulwama terror attack by the Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and the air strikes carried out by India against the training camp of JeM in Balakot, tensions have further escalated between India and Pakistan.
