New Delhi: A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi held former CBI interim chief M Nageswara Rao guilty of contempt of court and levied a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

The Supreme Court rejected his apology for transferring a CBI officer probing the Bihar shelter home rape cases against a top court order. They could not comprehend as to how he could relieve the investigating officer without taking the court's permission and termed it as a serious omission and contempt of court.

Not only did the court levy a fine but the CJI Ranjan Gogoi directed Nageshwara Rao to sit in the corner of the court room till the day's proceedings were completed, much to the embarrassment of the officer.

The Supreme Court came down heavily on the CBI for transferring Sharma, who was probing Bihar's shelter home cases, out of the agency in violation of the court's order and had directed Nageshwara Rao to personally appear before it on February 12.

Nageshwara Rao had admitted that he committed a mistake in transferring former joint director AK Sharma without prior approval of the court and apologised to the Supreme Court, saying he had no intention to circumvent its orders.
