London: In a massive blow to fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya, the United Kingdom's Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday ordered his extradition, favouring the arguments of the Indian government. Mallya is accused of defaulting Indian banks to the tune of Rs 9,000 crore, in addition to money-laundering charges. In 2016, business tycoon flew to the UK after a consortium of banks began legal action against him seeking repayment of his loans.

After due investigation, the CBI and ED approached the UK Courts for Mallya's extradition. While the agencies made strong arguments for his extradition, Mallya pointed out that political vendetta was the reason behind the charges. He said the conditions in Indian jails lack basic needs and hygiene.

Following arguments from both parties, the Court ordered in favour of the Indian agencies. The Court gave Mallya 14 days of time to appeal against its order.
