Nashik: Expressing his disgust, an onion farmer from the state of Maharashtra, donated the amount received from selling 750 kg of his produce to Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

Sanjay Sathe, who belongs to Niphad tehsil in Nashik district, was one among the few progressive farmers’ selected by the Union Ministry for Agriculture for an interaction with the then US president Barack Obama on his visit to India in 2010.

Talking to media on Sunday Sathe said, 'I produced 750 kg of onion this season but was offered a rate of Rs 1 per kg at Niphad wholesale market last week. 'Finally I could negotiate a deal for Rs 1.40 per kg and received Rs 1,064 for 750 kg.'

“It was gut wrenching to see such frugal returns after four months of hard work. Expressing my disgust, I have donated the Rs 1,064 to Disaster Relief Fund of the PMO as a protest. I paid an additional sum of Rs 54 for sending it by money order,' he added. Sathe said that he felt dispirited to receive such a frugal amount after toiling hard for four months and that is when he decided to donate the money to the Disaster Relief Fund of the PMO as a protest. Nashik district in north Maharashtra produces 50 per cent of onions grown in India.
