Heavy Rains Lash Kochi After Five Years

In India, monsoon first hits Kerala. And tourists throng the coastal town to enjoy the rains. The backwaters, blue sea, virgin beaches, green coconut trees dotting the sea coast is sure an eye feast. However, the southwest monsoon this time around has brought in heavy rains in Ernakulam (kochi). Met department says that this is the first time since 2013 that the region has experienced such a downpour.

The excess rain is said to be above 35% from June to July. To a leading english daily, senior atmospheric scientist CK Rajan said: "“The monsoon character has changed in the past few years. We appear to have forgotten how the monsoon feels like."

Schools, colleges have been declared shut following heavy rains to avoid inconvenience to commuters and children. According to reports, the water levels in all the rivers like Chalakudy puzha, Chitrapuzha, Periyar have gone up following heavy rains in Kerala.
