Sultanpur (Uttar Pradesh): The District Election Officer gave three days to Union minister Maneka Gandhi to respond for her remarks at a political rally here in Uttar Pradesh. She threatened Muslims that their work won't be done if they did not vote for her.

She is a BJP candidate from the Sultanpur constituency.

Addressing an election rally in Turab Khani village, Gandhi said, “I am winning... But if my victory is without support from Muslims, I won’t feel that good. Dil khatta ho jayega (heart will become sour). Then when a Muslim comes to me for work, I think let it be, how does it matter?” Gandhi said.

“It is all give and take, a negotiation, isn’t it? We are not all children of Mahatma Gandhi, are we?” she added.

Opposition parties took strong objection to her statement. Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala had said that she is dividing the country along caste and community lines.

Actor Swara Bhaskar, a vocal critic of the ruling BJP called the proposition 'sick'.

“Literally Sick. Is Maneka Gandhi threatening Muslims? Isn’t this unconstitutional? And criminal? She is admitting that she will abuse her power soon as she in office! @ECISVEEP This must violate something! ”

Later in the day, Maneka reacted to controversy saying that the media had twisted her statements.

"I love Muslims and I had myself called a meeting of the BJP's minority cell. I only meant to say that I am winning the elections and their participation would be like 'daal pe chaunka'(seasoning),” she said.
