Kurnool: Rayalaseema stalwart, Nandyala MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy died on Sunday after suffering a severe cardiac attack. He suffered the attack while in sleep and breathed his last undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nandyala town.

Doctors and the family confirmed the death of Bhuma Nagi Reddy(53) at noon. The funeral will be performed in Allagadda on Monday, said Bhuma's brother-in-law SV Mohan Reddy. He is survived by two daughters, of whom Akhilapriya is the MLA of Allagadda constituency, and a son.

YSR Congress Party chief, Leader of Opposition YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed his grief over the death of Bhuma and conveyed his deep condolences to the bereaved family. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Minister Kamineni Srinivas, MLC N. Lokesh Babu and party leaders condoled the death.

Jagan spoke to Akhilapriya over the phone and consoled her. He said in Bhuma's death he lost a family member. His mother Vijayamma also consoled Akhilapriya in the time of grief.

CM Chandrababu also spoke to Akhilapriya and assured her that he will support her like her father. Recalling his long association with Bhuma, Chandrababu said his untimely death was a loss to him personally, to the party and to people of Kurnool.

Speaker Kodela Sivaprasad and Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu also mourned the demise of their party colleague.

Telanganan Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao condoled Bhuma’s death. Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari rushed to Allagadda to participate in the funeral of his one time TDP colleague.

A three-time MP and sitting MLA from Nandyala, Bhuma joined TDP last year after winning on a YSR Congress Party ticket in the 2014 elections. Reddy's wife Shobha Nagireddy, who herself was a four-time MLA died in a tragic car accident on her way back from an election campaign during 2014 Assembly elections.

Reddy's daughter Akhilapriya, MLA from Allagadda, is seemingly distressed by father's sudden break down as she already lost her mother.

It is learnt that Bhuma was upset with the treatment meted out to him by Chandrababu Naidu who reportedly promised him a prominent position or ministry at the time of joining TDP last year.

Bhuma got operated twice earlier for heart ailment and this was the third time. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu personally monitored the health condition of his party leader, but was shocked to learn the news of his death.

Born on January 8, 1964, Bhuma entered politics in 1987 after the murder of his father Bhuma Bali Reddy. First served in local bodies, Nagi Reddy contested from Allagadda Assembly constituency in 1991 after his brother Bhuma Sekhar Reddy, a sitting MLA died of a heart attack. He won the by-election.

In 1996 he gained nationwide attention as he contested against the then prime minister PV Narasimha Rao as a TDP candidate. Though defeated narrowly he won lakhs of fans and got a wide publicity. PV Narasimha Rao resigned for Nandyala seat to retain Berhampur constituency leading to the by-elections. Bhuma was the undisputed candidate again from TDP and won with a record majority of over 4 lakhs on Congress' Rangaiah Naidu to enter for the first time in the 11th Lok Sabha.

In 1998, Bhuma won the same Nandyala Lok Sabha constituency on his traditional rival Gangula Prathapa Reddy with a slight majority of 4,550. He then improved his position and secured a majority of 72,600 in 1999 midterm polls over the same rival candidate. It was his third consecutive win to the Lok Sabha.

Bhuma couple joined hands with YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and played key a role in the formation of YSR Congress Party. He was a central committee member of YSR congress party, while Shobha Nagireddy was official spokesperson. Theirs was a love marriage. As both the families were known for faction politics in the district, the marriage became a big news those days.

However, Bhuma joined TDP in February 2016 along with his daughter Bhuma Akhila Priya, MLA of Allagadda.

His wife's untimely death and a stagnation in his political career, Bhuma was reportedly in depression. He participated in a meeting with the party chief Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday in connection with the introduction of budget in the Assembly.
