Movie Review: Munna Micheal

Utterly disappointing

By L. Ravichander

This dance and thrills tale fails to take off. Multiple causes derail this skill less attempt. There are too many compromises and a film with a running time of over 2 and half hours (or thereabouts) must have a huge justification for working on the attention and time of the viewer.

Also as go about crafting a film you must necessarily work on the strengths of the players and ensure you show case them for their strengths.

Even Gulzar once announced a Devdas where he wanted Hema as Paro and La Tagore as Chandramukhi and did not make bold to convert the adventure to reality. Here film maker defies logic and gets Nazazuddin

Siddiqui to play a comic villain who is tryig to learn dance from arguably one of the best ‘footed’ actors of our cinema. Things are planned to go awry and they do promptly. We have a great tradition in this part when we

have seen films like Saagara Sangamam and Thillana Mohanambal where dance is such an important facet of the film lore.

It is not like ABCD and Happy New Year. The problem with MM is it makes ABCD look like a classic Munna (Tiger) is an orphan picked up aging and rejected dancer Michael (Ronit Roy). The gifted boy can only dance and flex muscle – both of which come with ease. They however also land him constantly in trouble first in Mumbai and then in Delhi.

In Delhi he runs into a gang of goons headed by Mahender (Nawazuddin) who is a basher and killer of repute eagerly wanting to learn the fine art of dancing to impress his lady love by the coming Valentine’s Day. He thus engages Munna. Destiny throws its arrow and you find both Mahender and Munna in love with the same girl Dolly (Nidhi Agarwal). Don’t even ask why these two guys are wasting breath on such an innocuous person. Strange are the ways of our cinema!!

Well after a long winding narrative, the hero gets the girl and the villain resigns to his fate as does the audience. Tiger dances amazingly and that is the only virtue the film can boast of. Even the choreography is noting outstanding.

Tiger is made to constantly shift between dance and fight. Tries hard but cannot act enough to convince you that his character is not a caricature. Nawaz for once disappoints and hams to glory. Nidhi, well one only wonders how she got past a screen test.

This is a stay away movie. Spend time watching replays of the women cricket matches instead.
