Modi does the unthinkable!!

Count on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to do the unthinkable! The prime minister, who was on a visit to Afghanistan, suddenly made a stopover at Lahore in Pakistan, where he held one-on-one with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif. This extraordinary diplomatic coup took everyone by surprise.

* Complete secrecy: the hallmark of this meet is its complete secrecy. Neither Indian nor Pak media got an inkling of it. Modi's arrival in Pakistan was kept a secret for security reasons. The basic idea seems to be to deny both over-jealous media and terrorists an opportunity to hijack the talks.
* Not the first time they met: Contrary to the general belief, this Modi-Nawaz meet is the third meeting in three months. The most recent meet was in Paris, where they met on the sidelines of the climate summit.
* Hectic diplomatic activity: Again, contrary to the general belief that this was a sudden and unscheduled meet, the national security advisors of both the countries met at Bangkok recently. This was followed up by the foreign ministers meet in Islamabad recently. The stage for this meeting was set long back.
* PM visits Pak after 12 years: Modi is the first prime minister to visit Pakistan in 12 years. Last prime minister to visit Pakistan was Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Interestingly, both the prime ministers who visited Pakistan in the last 12 years were BJP prime ministers.
* Birthdays of Jinnah, Vajpayee: December 25 is important to both the governments. For the BJP government, December 25 is Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday. For Pakistan, today is its founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah's birth anniversary.
* Four PM to visit Pak: Till now, only four prime ministers visited Pakistan. Nehru visited twice, followed by Rajiv Gandhi, who visited Pak twice. Vajpayee too visited Pakistan twice.
