Every construction worker should take membership in the Labour Department to be eligible for the welfare schemes of the government, Home and Labour minister Nayini Narsimha Reddy said on Monday.
Addressing the 12th anniversary celebrations of Telangana Construction Workers' Association, he said the Telangana government is spending about Rs 5 crore to publicize the welfare programmes for the workers. A compensation package of Rs 5 lakh is given by the Labour Department on the death of a worker, he said. He also warned of strict action against officials demanding bribe from workers for the sanction of compensation and other benefits.
The minister suggested that various labour associations should come under a single federation umbrella so that the government can allot land and construct houses for them.
The Association office bearers and workers participated in the anniversary celebrations.
