Perhaps it’s the law of sequels that has Subhash Ghai in a fix over deciding between a remake or a sequel to his blockbuster movie ‘Khalnayak’. Even after declaring that he has found a ‘perfect script’ to make a sequel for his 1993 box office hit, the famed producer-director has revealed that he is in two minds whether to go ahead with the sequel ‘Khalnayak Returns’ or get back to the storyboard with a remake of the original.

The movie Khalnayak itself, was a ground breaking film back in the day, not only in terms of its high collections at the box office, but more particularly for its focus on the antagonist or the villain.

Aptly titled Khalnayak (The Villain), the movie had a heady star cast with three top actors of the day in Bollywood- Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Schroff and Madhuri Dixit, essaying the roles of the offbeat villain, the hero and the heroine.

If the theme, the movie title and the catchy number ‘Nayak nahin Khalnayak hoon main’ were not path breaking already, the sensational number ‘Choli ke Peeche’ raked in enough publicity to make the movie unforgettable.

The 1993 action thriller, produced and directed by Ghai himself, centered on the escape and attempted capture of a terrorist criminal Ballu (Sanjay Dutt) by inspector Ram (Jackie Shroff) and his girlfriend officer Ganga (Madhuri Dixit).

Ghai revealed his plans about working on three movies next year and that ‘Khalnayak Returns’ might be one of them. The sequel would fast forward to the end of the 20-year prison term that Ballu received after his capture in ‘Khalnayak’, and revolve around what happens to him then.

The filmmaker says since there are producers, who are also keen to remake the original, he is in two minds on which way to go. We have found a script, but are in two situations. There is a producer who wants to remake the original 'Khalnayak' and there is a producer who wants to make 'Khalnayak Returns'. So we are considering both the proposals, he said.

If he does indeed go for the sequel instead of a remake…we wish him good luck and hope that this would be one of those exceptions to the law of sequels where the sequel would not fail, but do justice to the original.
