Hyderabad: Muslims in Telangana rejoiced as the Chief Minister of the newest Indian state, K Chandrashekar Rao named Urdu as the Second Official Language in the State.

He was addressing the State Legislative Assembly on Thursday when he said making Urdu the second official language of Telangana was long overdue. In effect, Telangana students will have the option of writing competitive exams in Urdu too.

The Telangana Government will now appoint Urdu officers in all its departments. A District Selection Committee will soon be set up to recruit 900 Urdu teachers. Besides, the chief minister's office too will have two Urdu officers while four others will serve the General Administration Department.

KCR also intends to seek the help of Supreme Court to Increase Muslim quota in the Parliament. The TRS Chief also promised to secure 12% quota for Muslims in Education and employment. “When I started the statehood movement in 2001, everyone used to say it was impossible. But they were proved wrong. In the same way, doubts are being raised that it is not possible to secure 12 per cent quota for Muslims against the directions of Supreme Court’s cap of 50 per cent. I am confident that this too will be achieved soon,” said the Telangana Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, the BJP criticized KCR accusing him of "appeasement politics."
