Katju’s displeasure over Eenadu, Jyothy

Press Council of India (PCI) chairman Justice Markandey Katju on Friday expressed strong displeasure over two vernacular dailies Eenadu and Andhra Jyothy for the articles tarnishing the image of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

He asked why the newspapers published the articles such a way and shocked to know that even rejoinders were not considered to publish. The PCI conducted enquiry at Jubilee Hall in Hyderabad on Friday on the complaints filed by individuals and companies on media in four southern states - Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Naidu, Kerala and Karnataka. The PCI enquired in 19 cases filed against various newspapers and news channels.

Justice Markandey Katju scrutinized about six cases filed against Andhra Jyothy. He questioned the management of Andhra Jyothy that “can’t you take explanations while publishing news.” A woman who attended the IPC probe complained to Katju that the newspaper scribes had published articles against her without taking her explanation. The IPC chairman reacted and observed that Andhra Jyothy was resorting to ‘yellow journalism’. “Will you write news articles on your own wins and fancies for the sake of circulation and TRP ratings? Why can’t we cancel your licenses?” Justice Katju asked the representatives of Andhra Jyothy.

Earlier, Justice Katju announced that a committee was constituted to study the minimum education qualification for journalists and it would work under the supervision of Sravan Garg, member of Press Council of India.
