Karimnagar to replace Hyderabad for Smart City

Hyderabad: Telangana government has sought to replace Hyderabad with Karimnagar for the Smart City project and requested for more time to submit another proposal. In view of the fact that Hyderabad is developing on its own and receiving funds under various schemes, the government has decided to give the Smart City opportunity to Karimnagar.

After the long battle of the people of Telangana for a separate state came to an end with the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh into two telugu states in June 2014, the TRS government has initiated various schemes to develop Hyderabad city into an industrial and commercial hub and kick-started major reforms in the industrial policies. All efforts are being made to transform the city into one of the most preferred destinations for IT and other industries in India.

The central government's 'Smart City' initiative with a mission to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of people by enabling local development and harnessing technology as a means to create smart outcomes for citizens. In the first step, all states will use standardized criteria to pick their cities for the competition. Every state is guaranteed at least one city in the competition. Cities which submit the best proposals will receive funding and the remaining cities will have the chance to compete again next year.

Telangana government has earlier proposed Hyderabad, Warangal and Karimnagar for this project. However, the Union government approved Hyderabad and Warangal and Karimnagar was put on hold.
