Vijayawada: The 69th Pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Jayendra Saraswathi, has been rushed to Andhra Hospital in Vijayawada following a spurt in his blood pressure, here on Tuesday.

The seer was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state, by his disciples, where he was placed on ventilator support.

According to initial reports, the seer is on ventilator and is being given preliminary treatment. His disciples brought him to the hospital in an unconscious state, hospital sources said. As news of the Pontiff’s condition spread, scores of his followers from Vijayawada and elsewhere started gathering at the hospital. Local police have cordoned off the area in view of potential increase in crowd. He was nominated by his predecessor, Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal, as his successor and was given the divinely ordained pontifical title Sri Jayendra Saraswathi on March 22, 1954. He is one of the leading religious figures in Hinduism today.

In 2002 and 2004, two different cases were filed against Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi. But the seer was exonerated of all the charges in a long trial. Sri Jayendra Saraswathi has been one of the first Hindu religious heads to visit Dalit habitations and reach out to the marginalised sections. Swamy has also started several service projects which included hostels, economic empowerment schemes and it has also paid a key role in the propagation of Sanskrit language.
