Amid confusion about Jayalalithaa's health and uncertainty about whether she would continue to rule Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu cabinet held an emergency meeting at the Apollo Hospital, where Tamil Nadu CM is being treated.

The meeting became necessary as Jayalalithaa's continued absence has been affecting the day-to-day admnistration. Indications are that a deputy chief minister would be appointed to take care of the administration. Minister for Finance Panneerselvam and another senior minister Palani Swami have met Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao in the evening and discussed the issue with him. This has also become important as the Centre has recently alerted the State Government of the terror threat and the possibility of forces of anarchy resorting to arson.

Panneer Selvam and Palani Swami are in the race for deputy CM’s post. Panneer Selvam has served as Chief Minister twice when Jayalalitha was imprisoned.

Sources also revealed that Panneer Selvam and Palani Swami are in the race for deputy CM's post. Panneer Selvam has served as Chief Minister twice when Jayalalitha was imprisoned. His meeting with Governor Vidyasagara Rao is being seen as an attempt to put back the administration on rails.

Vidyasagar Rao discussed the Cauvery water issue and the General Administration in the state in the aftermath of hospitalisation of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The Governor also enquired about the arrangements made for the visit of a high-level central technical committee on the Cauvery water issue and the information to be presented to it so as to protect the interests of the Tamil Nadu farmers.
