Polavaram is to Andhra Pradesh what Hyderabad is to Telangana and completion of Polavaram project will address the needs of four states. This was stated by senior Congress leader and former minister Jairam Ramesh.

Opening the debate on the Polavaram bill, he said that Polavaram was a multi-purpose project. About seven lakh acres would be irrigated by the project and 960 MW of power will be generated from the project. Further Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra will also benefit from the project as 80 TMC of water will go to Krishna basin. Nearly 30 per cent of the project has been completed till now. "

Jairam reminded that he then personally obstructed for granting the permission for the project till the objections of Odisha and Chattisgarh states are clarified. “Later, the permissions were granted after the Government of Andhra Pradesh filed an affidavit in Supreme Court on the issue,” said the MP.

He reminded that there was no mention of transfer of villages in A.P.Reorganisation Bill-2014 that was sent to state assembly. “Later,Group of Ministers, headed by Sushil Kumar Shinde, made a recommendation to transfer seven mandals from Khammam to Andhra Pradesh,” said the MP.

“Telangana MPs opposed the shifting of seven mandals from their state. AP MPs opposed shifting of only submergence villages. With this, the union cabinet then met and took the decision of shifting six mandals completely and Bhadrachalam mandal partially. But, the election code of conduct came into force by then. So, we had left the decision on the same to the next union government,” said Jairam Ramesh.
