Jaggery Prices Cut Ahead of Medaram Jatara

The tradition has it that a devotee offers white jaggery by equalling it to his/her weight. Later is distributed among the devotees and other people as ‘prasadam’.

Hyderabad: In order to meet the whooping demand for jaggery during Sammakka Saralamma or Medaram Jatara, traders here in city are importing jaggery stock in huge quantities from neighbouring states of Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The Medaram Jatara is the biggest biennial tribal fair in Telangana and has congregation of people from not just Telangana, but also from Karnataka and Maharastra. It is also said that this Jatara is next to Kumb Mela in regards to number of people participating in the four-day festival. This year it will be held from January 31 to February 3 at Medaram village in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.

The tradition has it that a devotee offers white jaggery by equalling it to his/her weight. Later is distributed among the devotees and other people as 'prasadam'. With lakhs of people making this offering there will be huge demand for jaggery.

Keeping the demand and supply in view, the traders have lowered the price from Rs 40 to Rs 32. Total of 10 kgs of jaggery would cost around Rs 300. Traders in Osmangunj, Begumbazar are hoping to make brisk business in the next four days.
