Kolkata: The iconic Rabindru Setu bridge in Kolkata, which is popularly known as Howrah Bridge, has turned 75. The bridge which was built in pre-Independence era, was opened to public in 1943. Since then it has become a cynosure of all eyes as its grandeur has been depicted in cinema, magazine, art and culture.

The bridge an engineering marvel from the British pioneers, is the sixth longest and busiest bridge in the world. The bridge connects the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah from either sides of the river Hooghly.

And the most interesting fact of the bridge is it does not have a single bolt or a nut connecting both the ends. The old style of craftsmanship — riveting which means a metal piece (rivet) was used to assemble multiple plates. Holes were made to the plates in order to connect the gigantic structure.
