Why did the issue of Kapu reservations, which AP Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had always tried to push under the carpet, re-surface so suddenly? The Government has suddenly accepted the Manjunatha Commission's report and announced its decision to give 5 per cent reservation to the Kapu community. The issue has also been tabled in AP Assembly.

Interestingly, the Government's plan is self-defeating, according to Kapu leaders. By hiking the reservations to 55 per cent and sending the proposal to the Centre, the government has ensured that the Centre and the courts reject it. Hence Kapu leaders feel this is a ruse and an attempt to permanently put the issue in the back-burner.
