Is David Warner’s International Career Over?

In the aftermath of the recent outburst of Australia's unfortunate ball-tampering controversy, the team is set to miss two of the most promising batsmen, in their prime years, in today's international cricket, in Steve Smith and David Warner. Smith, who is often compared with Australia's very own Don Bradman, is currently the number one Test batsman. The former Australia captain, with a Test average of 61.37, is the closest ever player to the legendary Don Bradman's numbers.

Cricket Australia's ban for an year on either players will mean a huge setback to either players' professional career. Although Steve Smith has age on his side, when compared with Warner, an year's gap from international cricket would only hamper his phenomenal run of form.

Aged 31, Vice-captain David Warner is set be the biggest loser among the three banned players. Often involved in controversies, Warner has over the years earned an image of having a knack of a controlled attitude on and off the cricket field. Warner's recent brawl with South Africa player Quinton De Kock has unsettled the Australian side, most of which has reportedly isolated him following the incident.

Warner's comeback from here looks increasingly bleak, since there are fair chances that the Australian team grooms younger specialist openers to fill in his shoes by the time the left-hander serves his ban over 12 months. Adding to this, questions over his form and fitness would arise when Warner would be 32 years old next year.

After making a sensational international debut back in 2009, Warner looked a good prospect for Australia. He is the first Australian to play for the country with zero domestic experience, in over a century. His blistering T20 innings of 89 from 43 deliveries against the Proteas brought Warner into attention. Following this innings, Warner earned a spot in the ODI team besides making first-class debut. Warner never looked back since he went on to earn a Test cap in 2011.

IPL side Delhi Daredevils gave him an oppurtunity to evolve as a player in the international arena. Since then, the batsman stood up with solid performances in India, New Zealand and South Africa.

Among many such incidents, Warner made news for the wrong reasons in 2013, when he had a rift with England player Joe Root during the Ashes Tour in England. Amid hindrances like these, Warner kept up his performances across all formats, with incredible averages.
