In a noteworthy observation, all the IPL 2018 matches that were played so far have been won by the teams that have batted in the second innings. Come back team Chennai Super Kings made the most of their toss results, by winning both their matches chasing, against Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. Apart from CSK, the Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad successfully chased targets against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals respectively.

In the inaugural match of the season, the MS Dhoni-led team chased down a target of 166 against defending champions Mumbai Indians at Wankhede stadium. Asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians posted a score of 165/4 at the end of their innings. All rounder Dwayne Bravo turned the match in CSK's favour, with 68 runs off 30 balls.

In the second match of IPL 2018, Kings XI Punjab chased Delhi Daredevils' target of 167 with seven balls to spare, thanks to opener KL Rahul's record-making 51 runs from just 16 balls. The Karnataka batsman achieved the record of fastest fifty in the history of IPL, by hitting the half century in just 14 deliveries. DD Captain Gautam Gambhir's responsible innings of 55 off 42 balls went in vain as the Punjab team easily chased the target.

After posting a big total of 176, Royal Challengers Bangalore could not defend the score to Kolkata Knight Riders, after a 19 ball fifty from Sunil Narine in the third match of IPL 2018.

Rajasthan Royals posted a meagre total of 125 on the score board, due to continuous fall of wickets in the first innings of the fourth match of IPL 2018 against Sunrisers Hydeabad. Opener Shikhar Dhawan and captain Kane Williamson sealed an easy win for Sunrisers with a 114-run partnership for the first wicket.

In a cracker of a contest amid tensions, protests and threats over Cauvery water dispute in Chennai, home team Chennai Super Kings chased a daunting target of 203 against Kolkata Knight Riders in the fifth match of IPL 2018. After West Indies all rounder Andre Russell's monstrous innings of 88 from 36, KKR could not restrict CSK's top order batsmen. Thanks to the efforts of Sam Billings (56 off 23 balls) and Shane Watson (42 of 19 balls), CSK was successful in the chase.
