Hyderabadis’ To Taste Egyptian Onions From Next Week

HYDERABAD: Price of the onions  which have skyrocketed across the country has affected the City of Pearls as well. At present onions have touched Rs 100 per kg. However, consumers can breathe easy now as onion supply from Egypt is set to reach Hyderabad market after December 7.

As per reports, the marketing department has sent a request to the Telangana government to supply 500 metric tonnes of Egyptian onions. The first quota of 100 metric tonnes will arrive in the state on December 7.

According to marketing officials, the onions imported from the Egypt will first be sold at Saroornagar and Mehdipatnam Rythu Bazars. Prices could be pegged at Rs 60 to 62 per kg and will be sold in between 4pm and 7pm. The onions are purchased from Egypt at Rs 55 per Kg which includes transport charges.

According to reports, further imports of onions from Egypt will depend on the sales. The colour of the imported onions will be yellowish and the taste is also different from the local reddish and white onions.

The state usually depends on Maharashtra for onions. As the supply of onions from Maharashtra was reduced due to crop failure and various other factors the State of Telangana was getting only  70-80 lorry loads instead of the regular 120 to 150 lorries per day.
