Hyderabad: A woman identified as Manga was arrested on Tuesday for trying to sell a 15-day-old baby to a childless couple. Acting on a tip off, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport police raided Manga's house at Shamshabad and found the baby girl. The baby was brought from a couple in Guntur who were lured by money.

Shamshabad DCP PV Padmaja said that the baby was brought here from Macherla village in Guntur district. Manga was helped by an accomplice Gangadhar Reddy who is now absconding with another baby girl. Manga and her accomplice have been carrying out child trafficking and efforts are on to nab Reddy.

The child trafficking menace has been on the rise in the recent days. It may be recalled that last year, a BJP woman wing leader Juhi Chowdhury was arrested for her involvement in Japaiguri child trafficking case. The CID took her into custody from the Batasia area close to the Indo-Nepal border.

Along with Juhi, another four persons were arrested for their involvement in selling of babies and children across India and other countries in the last few months using an NGO. Sonali Mondal, Chief Adoption Officer of the NGO, Chandana Chakraborty, Chairperson of Bimala Sishu Griho and Manas Bhowmik, brother of Chandana were involved in the case. They were charged with selling 17 children, aged between 1-14 years to foreigners at high price.
