Huawei in Partnership With Flextronics to Make Devices in Chennai

Beginning with this month, Huawei is planning to produce 200,000 units per month and will enhance the production capacity later as it starts receiving more orders.

New Delhi: The world’s third largest smart phone maker Huawei’s new unit is at advanced stage of completion and expected to commence manufacturing smart phones in India this month. Huawei is implementing the project in partnership with contract manufacturer Flextronics. Huawei joins other Chinese manufacturers to make smart phones in the domestic market.

In August, Huawei opened its largest global service center in Bengaluru employing 1,000 engineers, network operations specialists and support staff, supporting more than 30 countries in Asia, West Asia and Africa, and serving over 350 million subscribers.

Flextronics’ assembly plant located near Chennai will begin commercial production of Huawei’s devices. The assembly unit is already engaged in making smart phones for Lenovo and Motorola. Huawei will make a formal announcement to this effect next week.

Initially, Huawei is planning to produce 200,000 units per month and will enhance the production capacity later as it starts receiving more orders. Huawei will roll out its latest models such as Honor 5C or Huawei P9, even as it may make multiple models at the facility.

Almost two decades ago, Huawei entered Indian market and subsequently set up its research and development (R&D) centre in 1999. The largest telecom gear maker in China was granted approval to make telecom equipment in India last year. In August, Huawei opened its largest global service center in Bengaluru employing 1,000 engineers, network operations specialists and support staff, supporting more than 30 countries in Asia, West Asia and Africa, and serving over 350 million subscribers.
