Homeguards’ Stir Intensifies, One Tries To Kill Self

Hyderabad: With the homeguards' agitation for job safety and resolution of long-pending problems intensifying, Telangana Director General of Police Anurag Sharma has appealed to them to call of their agitation and re-join duties.

In a statement on Friday, he said the Police Department will look into the problems of the homeguards with sympathy and that the government was committed for their welfare. He said the chief secretary and other senior officials were examining their demands.

On Thursday, as the parleys with chief secretary Rajiv Sharma failing, the home guards took out a rally from Indira Park to the Secretariat. The police, who tried to prevent them, resorted to lathi charge. At this, one of the homeguards doused self in petrol and tried set himself ablaze. He was rushed to the hospital.

The homeguards are demanding a clear statement on their job safety. Earlier in the day, homeguards DG Tejdeep Kaur Menon also appealed to the homeguards to call off their stir.
