Moderate to heavy rains are expected for three more days in Telangana

Hyderabad: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rains for Telangana State in the next week as the low-pressure air system over west-central Bay of Bengal is said to be moving in the north western direction.

The IMD said that Telangana, “Telangana can expect heavy rainfall over the next three days. But it remains to be seen if the low-pressure moves onto land to bring rain next week too.”

Meanwhile, the torrential rains in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states for last week caused inundation of many low-lying areas including the city of Hyderabad and crippled the normal life of the citizens. The incessant rains lead to the water logging and blockage of transportation to many villages in the states. The downpour on Tuesday evening caused many bridges and roadways blocked forcing the commuters stranded at many places.

Currently, all the rivers in all the district except Karimnagar across the state are in full spate with copious inflows from upstream. Almost all the tanks in the state are brimming with full water level and lion’s share of them are Nalgonda district had received the highest rainfall of 21cm. Many villages were flooded and lost the communication with the world due to power outage and blockage of transportation. Musi river has been receiving huge floods and 8 gates of the dam across the river in Nalgonda district were lifted to release the water downstream.

Floods hit Hyderabad: Hussain Sagar crosses FTL

Hyderabad city has witnessed about 164mm rainfall during last night resulting in several localities getting inundated. GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said the inflows in some tanks including Hussain Sagar lake have reached Full Tank Level (FTL) and further the forecast for tonight is likely recurrence of heavy rains, he said in a letter to NDRF Commandant (Andhra and Telangana area), based at Guntur, with requisition of NDRF for rescue and relief operations.

While the FTL of the lake is 513.41m, the recorded water level was 513.75m. By late evening, the level further increased to 513.75m even with a moderate spell of rain. Water from five nalas continued to flow into the Hussain Sagar even as officials opened gates on both sides of the lake. The inflow was 45mm Cu. whereas the outflow was 4,000 Cu on Wednesday night. In view of this, the Commissioner requested the NDRF Commandant to alert their contingent in Hyderabad and render possible help to the civil authority from tonight onwards till the heavy rains are receded.

Emergency in Irrigation Department

The TS government has announced the emergency in Irrigation Department and cancelled the holidays of the department officials and called them back to service for superintendence of management of water levels at the major and minor water projects and dams in the state. Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao ordered all the chief engineers to be available round the clock at their respective headquarters only to supervise the situation.

He alerted all the officials through WhatsApp to be vigilant on all the minor and micro irrigation projects like tanks and to plunge into the action to take the safety measures to ensure that all weirs and sluices of the tanks in the districts are safe and rescue operations in case of any emergencies especially in Nalgonda and Rangareddy districts. In the view of all the streams and rivers have been receiving huge inflows, the Minister also warned the chief engineers and irrigation department officials of stringent action in case of their absence either in the field or headquarters is found.

Chief Minister KCR reviewed on the current situation of rains and floods in the state

CM KCR reviews rain situation

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s office has reviewed the present situation in the rain affected areas across the state. He has instructed officials to use services of Army and Disaster management teams to control the situation. The Chief Minister also asked the officials to take necessary steps to evacuate people from low lying areas in the state if required.

As of now, 4 persons died due to the floods across the state.
