Gandhinagar: Congress MLA Vikram Madam today walked out of the Gujarat Assembly after he was not allowed to speak during a discussion on establishing a branch of the AIIMS in the state.

Madam was irked at a remark made by deputy chief minister Nitin Patel on the issue during the Question Hour of the Assembly's ongoing budget session.

Patel, who holds the heath portfolio, had said that a sitting Congress MLA did nothing to set up a branch of the AIIMS in Gujarat when the MLA was a Lok Sabha MP.

"The Congress heard about AIIMS only after the BJP came to power at the Centre. A Congress MLA present in the House did nothing to establish it in Gujarat when he was an MP," said Patel during the Question Hour.

Since Madam was a Lok Sabha MP from Jamnagar between 2009 and 2014, he objected to Patel's comments and asked Speaker Rajendra Trivedi for permission to reply.

Madam rushed near the Well of the House asking for a chance but was asked by the Speaker to get back to his seat first.

Madam, who won from Khambhalia seat of Devboomi-Dwarka district in the recently held Assembly polls, walked out from the Assembly after he was not allowed to speak.

Patel, responding to a question about AIIMS raised by Congress MLA Harshad Ribadia, said that it was the prerogative of the Centre to decide which city would get a branch of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

He informed the House that the state government had shown two locations each near Vadodara and Rajkot to a central committee as potential sites for the AIIMS, which will comprise a multi-specialty hospital, a medical college and a research centre. (PTI)
