Varanasi celebrates what is known as Dev Deepavali or the Diwali of the Gods, wherein grand rituals are undertaken by the priests at Ravidas Ghat and Raj Ghat to welcome the gods, who are believed to descend to Earth just to bathe in the holy waters of River Ganga flowing past this city. Other reason for attracting most of the travellers is that is also celebrates Ganga Mahotsav.

Kolkata

The concept of Diwali is totally different in the City of Joy, Kolkata. The residents of Kolkata perform Kali puja during Diwali. Just like Durga Puja, Kali Puja pandals are made all across the city along with beautiful lighting decorating every corner of the city. Goddess Kali is considered to be the one who defeated evil. Apart from the Kali puja, Bengalis celebrate Diwali in a simialar fashion by burning crackers and lighting diyas.

Chennai

The capital city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai celebrates Diwali quite different from what most of the nation celebrates. Dhanteras in Tamil Nadu is known as Dhana Trayodasi or Ashwayuja Bahula Trayodasi.
Residents of Chennai also worships Goddess of health, Dhanvantari. The local population worships Kubera, the divine treasurer, and offers him dry dates, honey and jaggery. Burning of crackers across the city is followed by burining effigies of Narakasura to mark his downfall at the hands of Aditi and Krishna.

Goa

One of the most popular year ending party destinations in India, Goa is also famous for its Diwali celebrations.  The Diwali celebrations in Goa are popular especially because of how on Narak Chaturdashi, every village burns larger-than-life sized effigies of Narakasura. Interesting competitions are also held among the villagers to judge whose effigy is the tallest and the scariest. Tourists from across the world visit this epic destination during Diwalii.

Amritsar

One of the place to celebrate Diwali in our country with the peak enthusiasm is Amristar and whole Punjab. Some grand Diwali parties are also arranged across the city. Diwali is celebrated in a little different because Sikhs celebrate it as the day that marks the return of Guru Hargobind Sahib from Mughal captivity. Travellers also get a chance to see the famous Golden temple getting lighten up with thousands of lamps lined along the edge of the lake.
