Chandrababu Should Introspect Before Pointing Fingers At PM Modi

There is a saying in vernacular languages that after eating a hundred mice, the cat went to perform the Haj ceremony. Drawing an analogy from this, one wonders why Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu made his recent trip to Delhi and why he is returning to the national capital once again. It appears as if he is out to seek the help of the Congress and other political parties, should be engulfed by the flames of several scams in which he is squarely involved.

The AP Chief Minister seems to be in a state of total panic. Chandrababu Naidu claims that democracy is under threat in the country and that he is out to protect it. Hence his trips to Delhi, he says.

Moreover, he says that Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to deliver on the promises he made.It is possible that PM Modi is indeed undermining constitutional institutions as Chandrababu says. However, before speaking about this, it would have been much better had Chandrababu done some introspection. As his political rivals and others point out, Chandrababu has no peer in managing and undermining constitutional bodies. His track record in this respect speaks for itself, they say. For instance, it is widely known that he had bought over 23 MLAs from YSRCP in a brazen horse-trading exercise and yet has the gumption to talk about democracy, democratic institutions telling anyone who cares to listen that Modi is out to cause irreparable damage to them. Does this make sense? Is it not Chandrababu who is manipulating the institution of the speaker to ensure that the anti-deception law does not apply to turncoat MLAs? Oddly enough, no media person in New Delhi raised this question earlier and it is unlikely whether they would do so in his current Delhi trip. Haven't the Telugu Desam Party Janma Bhoomi Committees destroyed the panchayat system at the grassroot level in villages? Chandrababu's allegation that demonetisation was not implemented effectively and that black money was not entirely driven out, has a ring of truth to it. However, look at the manner in which he pumped tons of black money into the Nandyal elections? Chandrababu criticises PM Modi on non-delivery of promises. He recounts that PM Modi had promised Rs 15 lakh in every bank account. However, he forgets that he sailed with the BJP when these commitments were being made. He also forgets the fact that in Andhra Pradesh, he had promised to waive loans adding up to 89,000 crore rupees. To what extent could he succeed in fulfilling his promise is another question. This is also the case with DWCRA women groups. He had promised to waive their loans, but did he act on his promise? What was his promise on unemployment allowance? Could he deliver on it?

Chandrababu made an array of promises to diverse segments of society including reservations for Kapus. How different is Chandrababu Naidu from those he is aiming to criticise? It is clear that the inquiry into the murder attempt on Leader of Opposition in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is predictably being watered down. The direction the probe is taking, skirting the real issues underlying the attack on the YSRCP chief is evident.

Chandrababu needs to respond to the question as to why he is reluctant to hand over the probe into the murder attempt on the YSRCP chief to the CBI or a third-party agency. While he has every right to criticise PM Modi, it is amusing to find Chandrababu Naidu refer to himself as a paragon of virtue when it comes to protecting the sanctity of the constitution. The TDP chief alleged that the media is scared of Narendra Modi. He needs to take a closer look at what he is doing in Andhra Pradesh. He thinks people would have forgotten the fact that he does not permit media outlets whom he frowns upon, to work freely in Andhra Pradesh. This vile action of his is without precedent in the history of the state. As Union home minister Rajnath Singh said the other day, politics cannot be predicated on lies and deception alone. An ounce of integrity is required. It does not help to certify oneself as a man of character, as Chandrababu Naidu tends to do. It is for the people of the state to give him the certificate and for him to earn it from them. Unfortunately for him, he hopes that people will give credence to the certificate which he gives to himself. That is the tragedy of his political career.
