Anasuya Sarabhai celebrates her 132nd birth anniversary today

Netizens were in for a pleasant surprise on Saturday when they saw Google doodle on Anasuya Sarabhai. Today is her 132nd birth anniversary and Google honoured her with a doodle to mark her special day. For all you guys who are clueless about the person, Sarabhai is a person who championed the women's labour movement in India. She was also founder of the Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association (Majoor Mahajan Sangh), India’s oldest union of textile workers, in 1920.

Born into the affluent Sarabhai family of Ahmedabad, Anasuya was married off at an early age of 13 after she lost her husband. After a turbulent marital life, Anasuya came back to her family and then went to England to continue her studies. Thereafter, there was no looking back for her. She started a school for poor students and toilets for women.

She was deeply distressed by the slavery of women that existed at her time. It was then she decided to something about it.She fought against the mill owners to ensure better work environment and decent wages for the labourers. That's perhaps the beginning of trade union movement in India. She was also instrumental in starting the Self Employed Association of India (SEWA) in 1972.
