Ganesha idols made from clay

The decision of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to spread the awareness on the need for using eco-friendly Ganesha idols made of clay is to be welcomed by all.

A press release from the HMDA Metropolitan Commissioner, Rajeshwar Tiwari said that residents living in neighbourhoods around various water bodies in the city would commit themselves to conserving the eco-system by taking a pledge to protect lakes and water bodies on one of the days (September 9, 10 and 11) .Probably for the first time ever, the HMDA has taken the initiative of setting up special distribution centres of Ganesha idols made from clay and natural colours as opposed to plaster of paris idols that are coated with toxic paint that are sold conventionally.

The HMDA proposes to nudge the public at large towards using environment-friendly substances because of the alarming rate at which lakes and water bodies are rapidly shrinking and getting increasingly polluted all over the twin cities.

The Society for Awareness and Vision on Environment (SAVE) is one of the few organizations that have put their hand up in spreading in the awareness on using idols made of clay and natural colurs. All these clay idols are being made at the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) Nursery situated at Erragadda.
A small, eight-inch idol would be sold for Rs 10 and a larger one of 4.5 feet in size at about Rs 1,000.
