Flight Services To Take Off From Shirdi In May

Pune: Shirdi, one of the most revered religious places in the country, will start its flight operations from May. Despite the controversial statement of Swami Swaroopanad Saraswati against the construction of airport at Shirdi, the Maharashtra government decided to unveil the airport next month. It may be recalled that Swaroopananda raked a controversy saying that worshiping Sai Baba brought severe drought in Maharashtra and an airport at Shirdi is only a waste of money.

The airport is located at Kakdi village, about 14km south-west of Shirdi in Maharashtra. Officials said that the airport is almost ready and would witness flight movement from the month of May. It will be operated by Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited.

The chairman of MADC Vishwas M. Patil said that it took Rs320 crore to complete the project. "In the domestic circuit, we expect four to five flights operating from the airport initially from major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad. More routes will be added in the near future," Patil said.

The airport has around 2,500 meter runway along with a terminal building measuirng 3,000 meter. The piligrim center expects more number of devotees at the temple this year as the temple has its centenary celebrations in October.
