Huzurabad: A family of five - husband, wife and their three children - committed suicide after they were branded as sorcerers. The incident occurred at Kandugula village of Huzurabad mandal in Karimnagar district on Monday. According to the police, the victims have been identified as Ganta Komaraiah (36), Komaramma (34), Yellamma (10), Komaravva (8), Anjamma (6).
Komaraiah, a resident of Gangireddy Colony in the village, visited their in-laws house in Kondapur village of in Chigurumamidi mandal in the district. However, the locals of Kondapur accused them of practicing witchcraft. Some of them had even attacked Komaraiah and his wife Komaramma.
Dejected by the way they were treated, Komaraiah along with his family returned home and decided to end their lives. The couple first strangled their children to death and later committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan. The bodies were shifted to the government hospital for autopsy. The police registered a case and launched investigation.
Condemning the incident, Telangana Minister Etela Rajender visited the government hospital to inspect the bodies. Action would be taken against those responsible for the family's suicide, he said. Etela directed the officials to bring awareness among the people in the rural areas about rational thinking and asked the people not to believe in superstitions like witchcraft.
