Hyderabad: A fake doctor has been asked to pay Rs2.4 lakh compensation by Hyderabad Consumer Forum on Monday for wrongly diagnosing a patient and causing his death

K. Ambanna lodged a complaint with the forum that his son was suffering from high fever and headache and was taken to nearby Swarupa clinic for treatment. The doctor Swaroopa Rani treated him by giving him some fluids and an injection. After sometime the right side of the patient was paralysed, when the patient's father asked about the issue she referred him to another hospital.

The patient's father shifted him to Osmaina hospital after two private hospitals refused to admit him as his condition was critical. He died at Osmania hospital where doctors declared that his death was due to wrong diagnosis.

When an inquiry was conducted after Ambanna complained with the forum, it was revealed that Swaroopa Rani was not a qualified doctor. She is a head nurse, who worked in various hospitals. She opened a clinic by her name to treat the patients with the expertise she gained as a nurse. Swaroopa Rani told the forum that she did not diagnose any patient. She further argued that the complainant is not a consumer and requested for dismissal of the case.

On hearing the arguments of both parties, the forum imposed a fine of Rs2.4 lakh on the fake doctor for treating a patient like a doctor and causing his death and an additional Rs5,000 towards expenses.
