A still of Rajinikanth from the movie

As Rajinikanth-starrer 2.0 movie released on Thursday, the High Court of Madras had ordered 37 internet service providers (ISPs) to block over 12,000 websites for exhibiting pirated versions of Tamil movies online. 2,000 websites operated by ‘TamilRockers’ were included in the list. Justice M Sundar passed the order on Wednesday while allowing a plea moved by the movie’s producer Lyca Productions Private Limited,.

When the plea came up for hearing, Lyca’s advocate Vijayan Subramanian produced before the justice an elaborate list of 12,564 illegal web portals. The advocate made a point that when ‘TamilRockers’ website is blocked, it instantly creates mirror websites by changing a minute part of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or any such extension, and are therefore able to reestablish the infringed material with little effort.

A probable list of extension of ‘TamilRockers’ was produced by Subramanian and an injunction was sought against all such websites.

According to the production company Lyca, 2.0 their latest outing with Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar , Amy Jackson and others, directed by S. Shankar has been released globally in more than five languages, including Mandarin in China .

As a part of the promotion of the film a trailer was released on the social media platforms.  The official trailer, published on YouTube, has garnered 13,089,498 views, the counsel said.

The production house Lyca has all authority over distribution rights along with theatrical and music copyrights, besides other rights, including TV, internet, digital and home video rights exclusively, under the Copyright Act. It conveyed that such illegal websites might exhibit pirated versions of the film soon after its release. The web pages and websites which provide such links are innumerable and are spread all over the globe said, the plaintiff counsel.

These websites are permitted to be viewed in India through various internet service providers and 37 name’s are listed in the plea, the company claimed.
