Kathi Mahesh Held For Offending Religious Sentiments

Hyderabad: Film critic Kathi Mahesh was arrested for making inappropriate remarks on Hindu deities. The Banjara Hills police in the city took Mahesh Kathi into custody following complaints from Hindu groups. He was reportedly questioned for two hours and asked to be available to the cops.

While taking part on the phone in a television programme, Kathi Mahesh is alleged to have made the remarks in question, with regard to a Hindu God. Taking strong objection to the remarks made by the well-known film critic, some groups lodged a police complaint. A Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) worker Kiran Nandan lodged a complaint with the police stating that the religious sentiments of Hindus had been hurt by Mahesh Kathi's inappropriate statements.

Police registered a case against Kathi Mahesh under Sections 295(1) and 505(2) of IPC and shifted him to the Banjara Hills police station. He was questioned for two hours before being let off. However, the film critic was asked to be available to the authorities. Incidentally, apart from Hyderabad, cases have been registered against Mahesh Kathi in other parts of both the Telugu-speaking states.

Meanwhile, Mahesh Kathi tweeted to say that he has no intention of instigating any kind of communal violence. His post says that he had expressed his views as a film critic and that he is a rationalist and humanist.Kathi Mahesh's tweet further says that his views are within legal and constitutional limits.
